Lotte Lenya
(1898 - 1981)

One of musical theatre's most enigmatic performers, Lotte Lenya is best-known for originating the role of prostitute Jenny in THE THREEPENNY OPERA (1928), composed by her husband, the legendary Kurt Weill. She went on to reprise the role in the 1931 German film version and the 1954 Broadway production (winning the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a musical).

She also appeared on Broadway as Duchess in Kurt Weill & Ira Gershwin's THE FIREBRAND OF FLORENCE and as Fraulein Schneider in the original 1966 production of Kander & Ebb's CABARET.

On the big screen, she garnered a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination as the Contessa in THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE.  James Bond fans also know her as Rosa Klebb, the Russian agent with the poisonous shoes, in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE.

In 2007, Lenya and Weill's love story was the subject of the short-lived musical LOVEMUSIK starring Donna Murphy and Michael Cerveris.
