KERRY BUTLER: FAITH, TRUST & PIXIE DUST

Audio CD
Reviewed by Ligia Fernandez

While Ms. Butler is an established Broadway star (currently in XANADU) and a capable singer, this Disney-inspired CD borders on the bland. Mostly tunes that have been covered before by much better singers (WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR, BABY MINE, THE BARE NECESSITIES, COLORS OF THE WIND), plus a sprinkling of less-recorded selections (including the rather obscure THIS ONLY HAPPENS IN THE MOVIES, from Who Discovered Roger Rabbit? - an unreleased prequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?)

She tackles all the up tempo numbers with her trademark perky soprano. However, she fares best on the ballads -- most notably Hamlisch & Ashman's DISNEYLAND from the 1986 musical Smile and Fain & Cahn's THE SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT from Disney's animated 1953 film Peter Pan.

If you're a fan of Ms. Butler's or Disney music, this one is definitely for you.
